Secondary headaches are a class of headache disorders caused by an underlying health condition. Secondary headaches are very dangerous as they can be life-threatening.

The following conditions could cause secondary headaches;

  • Hypertension
  • Dehydration
  • Brain Tumor
  • Carbon-monoxide poisoning
  • Hangover
  • Concussion
  • Stroke

The following symptoms are indications that you could be suffering from a secondary headaches disorder;

  • A new or different type of headache in someone over 50 years old,
  • Headache that wakes you from sleep
  • Headache worsens when changing posture.
  • Headache that comes with chewing food
  • Headache that comes with a head injury
  • Vomiting without nausea
  • Headache develops within seconds

Secondary headaches can be diagnosed through blood tests and imaging tests (sinus x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, Computer Tomography Scan). The treatment of secondary headaches depends on the causal factor.  A secondary headache caused by a sinus infection can be treated using Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medicine.
